Marchman Act Blog: Reputed Colombian drug lord appears in Miami court
A reputed Colombian drug boss who climbed the ranks of the once-dominant North Valley cartel stood before a Miami federal magistrate in handcuffs and prison uniform Tuesday, a day after authorities flew him out of Venezuela.
Prosecutors said they will seek to detain Jaime Alberto Marin-Zamora as he awaits trial on charges that he conspired to distribute thousands of kilos of cocaine in his homeland knowing that the drugs would be smuggled into the United States.
Marin-Zamora, 48, known in the underworld as "Beto," will have a detention hearing on Friday and arraignment Nov. 1. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison. Read Full Story...
