Marchman Act Blog: Police identify man who died after shooting, crash near Georgia Pig in central Broward

A man who died Friday after a violent clash with officers in central Broward was identified Saturday as a 37-year-old who was already under the investigative eye of law enforcement.

Hugh Barrington Smith, whose latest address was unknown, died Friday afternoon after the confrontation in unincorporated Broward off U.S. 441.

Smith was under investigation at the time by a task force from the Broward Sheriff's Office and the city police departments of Fort Lauderdale and Miramar, BSO revealed Saturday.

Other details emerged as well about the deadly confrontation. BSO reported that Smith had a "lengthy, violent" criminal history and was carrying a large stash of narcotics and $46,000 in cash in his Honda when he died.
