Marchman Act Local News: Gratitude House: Single mother of twins beats drugs and returns to school

Kathleen Delapine discovered she was pregnant while in the Palm Beach County jail for grand theft auto and then learned she was carrying twins just before giving birth.

"It was exciting. It was scary. I can't explain it. It was a pretty amazing feeling," she said.

That was 17 months ago, and it was a life-changing experience for Delapine.

"I had a substance abuse problem and it pretty much ruined my life and it left me out on the streets and I was pretty helpless and I didn't think that I could find any way out of that situation."

She said she had been drinking and doing drugs since middle school.

"When I got out of high school, it took off from there and it continued to get worse," she said. "I started losing jobs. I lost my friends. I was living at home. My family really didn't want to have anything to do with me and eventually I just proceeded to do harder and harder drugs, and I left and never came back."
